Date Cookies

1 cup chopped dates
1 cup nuts
1 tsp flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
3 1/3 cup flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
dash salt

Cook dates, nuts, flour, sugar and water over medium heat until thick. Let cool. Mix together dough. Roll out in circles like sugar cookies. Put a drop of filling in center of 1/2 the circles. Put other 1/2 of circles on top. Seal the edges with a fork. Can also fold the circle over to make twice as many half circle cookies. Bake 350° F. for about 8 min.
